Infrastructure
The presence of the
Department of Marine Technology
and
MARINTEK
(one of the world’s leading marine technology research
organizations) at the site of the CoE, provides a unique opportunity
for synergy and support. A total of about 250 scientific, technical
and administrative personnel, as well as about 200 fourth and
fifth-year students and 60 doctoral students reside at
MTC. Approximately 40 researchers are currently involved in the
disciplines that form the basis for the CoE. Another cooperating
orgaanization,
SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture,
with about 20 persons
engaged in R&D relevant for the CoE, is also located in Trondheim,
not far from to MTC. The relationship with MIT will be further
developed. Other international contacts will be based on individuals
in the three relevant disciplines and also in related disciplines such
as oceanography and numerical mathematics as well as probabilistic
methods.
Moreover, the Centre will utilize facilities in the Trondheim Marine Systems Research Infrastructure, (TMSR-RI) , which include an Ocean Basin, 80x50 m with adjustable bottom with water depth from 0 and 10 m, wave makers, as well as facilities for current and wind; and a new marine cybernetics laboratory with main dimensions 40 x 6.45 x 1.5 m, wave generators as well as novel technology for navigation and high precision controlled large motion tests in 6 DOF.
