The Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Ships and Ocean Structures announces

Unique opportunities for research

An international centre of excellence for developing fundamental knowledge for the design and operation of future ships, offshore structures, floating bridges and airports, aquaculture installations and other ocean structures by integrating theoretical and experimental research in marine hydrodynamics, structural mechanics and automatic control, has been established at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The Centre will operate as of November 2002, for a period of 10 years, with an annual budget of about USD 3.5 million and will continuously involve 25-35 researchers. Revenues include a significant contribution from The Research Council of Norway, and contributions from, among others, the following companies and organizations based in Norway: ABB, Det Norske Veritas, MARINTEK, NTNU, Shipowner’s Association of Norway, Norsk Hydro, Statoil and SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture. The Centre will operate in close cooperation with the large marine technology community at MARINTEK and NTNU, a group of MIT professors and other international leading universities and research institutes. International sponsors will also be invited to cooperate.

This Centre of Excellence would hereby like to announce up to 20 research positions in the categories of postdoctoral fellows, visiting researchers or professors, as well as doctoral candidates who, at least, have an M.Sc. degree.

The research will be directed towards development of theoretical methods and will also be coupled to model testing and full scale experiences.

Relevant educational background and work experience for candidates will be naval architecture, ocean engineering, engineering mechanics, aeronautics, civil engineering (structures), electrical or mechanical engineering (automatic control), applied mathematics and statistics and experimental techniques, or combinations of such disciplines.

The applicants should indicate which areas of research they are interested in according to the details provided in the website, and how it links to previous studies and research work.

Fellowships for doctoral studies are contingent upon fulfilling entrance requirements for dr.studies at NTNU, which include English language requirements, e.g. by passing a TOEFL test with a minimum score of 500 points. The language test can be done after arrival to Trondheim.

The fellowship period for doctoral studies will be 3 years or possibly 4 years with a 25 % part-time duty as a teaching assistant.

The position is remunerated according to wage levels 29 to 56 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 245 400 to NOK 382 000 a year. Doctoral students are normally remunerated at wage level 37, NOK 275 900 a year, but could in special cases be remunerated higher based upon qualifications. The salary will be increased according to normal salary policy.

Postdoctors and visiting researchers will normally be engaged for a period of one or two years, with a possibility of extension contingent upon the results achieved in the period. The gross salary will normally be NOK 343 400, but could in special cases be higher based upon qualifications and performance, and will be increased according to normal salary policy.

There is a compulsory 2 % deduction to the pension fund.

As NTNU would like to increase the percentage of females in academic positions, women are especially invited to apply.

The Centre would also like to welcome European dr. students from other universities to the Centre under the auspices of Marie Curie Training Sites (see website). Support can then be provided for a stay of 6 to 12 months at the Centre to carry out part of the doctoral study.

The Centre would especially welcome visiting professors or senior scientists from research institutes who spend a sabbatical at the Centre with partial support from the Centre, to cover travel expenses and extra expenses connected with the stay in Norway.

We generally encourage applications from personnel who can come to the Centre as soon as possible, but we would also like to discuss plans for a future stay at the Centre.
