About IMDC

The International Marine Design Conference (IMDC) is held every three years. In promoting its aims and visions, IMDC was held successfully nine times over the past 25 years.

In spring 1982, the first of the IMDC series of conferences was held in London (United Kingdom). Successive conferences were held every three years, namely 1985 in Lyngby (Denmark), 1988 in Pittsburgh (USA), 1991 in Kobe (Japan), 1994 in Delft (The Netherlands), 1997 in Newcastle (United Kingdom), 2000 in Kyongju (Korea), 2003 in Athens (Greece) and 2006 in Ann Arbor-Michigan (USA).

A wide variety of peer-reviewed papers from many countries around the world are presented at the conferences, covering a variety of topics related to design methodologies, innovative ship and offshore design, design for production, design for safety, design for operation, CAD/CAM systems and IT technology, risk consideration, naval ship design and naval design education.

Workshops on various related areas were also arranged during the conferences to excite the interest of participants and promote challenging discussions on ship design theory and practice, as well as the interaction between science and the marine industry.

In addition to the technical programme, commonly a program of social events runs throughout every conference to bring all participants and their accompanying partners in touch with the history and culture of the host country and to ensure an interesting and in all respects stimulating stay and enjoyable conference.

Aims

The aim of the International Marine Design Conference (IMDC) is to promote all aspects of marine design as an engineering discipline. The 10th Conference, organized by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), will support and further this aim through a strong technical program with contributions from both industry and academia around the world. The focus will be on key design challenges and opportunities in today’s rapidly chang-ing maritime marketplace, with special emphasis on sustainable design of vessels and fleet.
